Purchasing a precious stone from us means that it’s quality and value will be recognised worldwide – all of our loose diamonds are sourced from the top 25% of the world’s production of gem quality stones.

We have a selection of diamonds certified by the Gemmological Institute of America (GIA), the final word on gem quality, among dealers worldwide.

You can experience this for yourself by arranging a private diamond consultation. Contact us today to arrange an appointment.

While all diamonds are precious, the Earth's rarest and most valuable are those possessing the very best combination of the four C’s – colour, clarity, cut, carat.

At Townsend, all our loose diamonds are sourced from the top 25% of the world’s production of gem quality stones and our very finest diamonds are in the top 1% of the world’s production.

To ensure a more beautiful and brilliant diamond, Townsend’s enforce standards most other choose to ignore.

Our in-house experts categories our diamonds based on the quality and rarity combinations that nature and expert gem cutters provide.

Our diamonds comes in 4 categories: the finest, very fine quality, fine quality and good quality.

Buying your diamond from Townsend means that its quality and value are guaranteed. Our stones are graded according to internationally recognised standards. We don’t create our own grading classifications like some national chains of jewellers.

The Gemmological Institute of America (GIA) is the premier gem testing laboratory in the world. It certifies most of the diamonds we sell. A certificate from the GIA guarantees that your diamond is independently recognised as possessing all the qualities specified in the report. It is a “blueprint” of the diamond and an assurance of its identity.

Choose from Oval, Marquise, Pear, Princess, Brilliant or Emerald cuts.

The best colour for a diamond is no colour at all. The absolute finest colourless stone carries a “d” rating, descending through each letter of the alphabet to “z” which designates a diamond of light yellow, brown or grey.

Colour differences are very subtle and it is very difficult to see the difference between, say, an “e” and “f”. Therefore, colours are graded under controlled lighting conditions and are compared to a master set for accuracy.

Other rare diamonds with a pure colour, such as pinks, blues or greens, are also valuable and are known as “fancies”. There is a separate colour grading system for fancy-coloured stones, which takes into consideration various factors such as hue and saturation. Coloured diamonds are exceptionally rare and expensive.

Many high street jewellers use their own grading classifications, rather than the recognised industry standards. We only use GIA’s internationally recognised grading system, so the colour grading of a Townsend diamond is independently guaranteed.

A diamond, more than any other gemstone, has the ability to produce the maximum amount of lustre. However most diamonds contain tiny natural marks called inclusions and their number, size and location all affect the diamond’s clarity grade.

One that is free of interior inclusions or exterior flaws has nothing to interfere with the passage light through the stone and, as such, is of the highest quality. These stones are very rare. Whilst it is true that the clearer a diamond is, the better it is, minor inclusions will not diminish a stone’s beauty for endanger its durability.

Clarity is what most untrained jewellers will advise you to look at when buying a diamond, because it is the easiest of the four C’s to demonstrate. Anyone can put a diamond under a microscope and see if it has inclusions or marks.

Contrary to popular belief, higher clarity does not always mean more beautiful. If the inclusions are not visible to the naked eye, a higher clarity alone does not improve the appearance of a diamond. Colour and cut both have a greater part to play in its beauty.

Of course, a higher clarity is more desirable and valuable, because of its rarity, but knowing that you have selected the right clarity for the right reason is more important. Townsend will help you make an informed decision about the clarity of the diamond you are buying.

No matter where you purchase your diamond, one of the most important considerations should be the cut and proportioning of the stone.

It is the cut that enables a diamond to make the best use of light. When a diamond is cut to good proportions, light is refracted internally form one facet to another before being dispersed through the top of the stone, giving that all important sparkle and 'fire'.

If the cut is too deep, some light will escape through the opposite side of the pavillion, too shallow and light will escape through the pavillion before it can be refracted. A master cutter ensures full light dispersion, maximising the beauty of the stone.

Townsend doesn’t just sell on colour and clarity, as many jewellers do. We pride ourselves on sourcing the finest cut diamonds available.

The difference between a diamond that is flawless and colourless, but looks dull and dead, and a bright, sparkly diamond is determined by how well the diamond has been cut and proportioned.

Poorly cut stones are cheaper. Stones cut to perfect proportions, symmetry and polish will be more expensive, but they will look more expensive. Remember to ask about all four C’s when buying your stone – not just colour, carat weight and clarity.

Townsend will show you the difference that perfect cut and proportion make to the beauty of your diamond.

The size of a diamond is measure in carat-weight. One carat is divided into 100 ‘points’, so that a diamond of 75 points weighs 0.75 of a carat.

While carat-weight is the most obvious factor when assessing the value of a diamond, two diamonds of equal size can have very unequal values, depending on colour, clarity or cut.

Since larger diamonds are found less frequently in nature, which places them at the rarest level of diamond quality, a 1-carat diamond will cost more than twice a 0.50-carat diamond.

Remember, bigger isn’t necessarily better! Diamonds of the finest quality can be found in all size ranges. The most important thing is to establish which of the 4 'C' characteristics are most important to you.

Townsend’s appreciate that some customers do want the extra “wow” factor a larger carat diamond provides. By cleverly balancing the combinations of the other three C’s, our experts can find you a larger diamond that represents excellent value for money, but does not compromise on the quality of the stone.
